EARLY WARNING SIGNS
FOR AMD REVEALED
Eating plenty of leafy
green vegetables, particularly raw spinach and
curly kale, can reduce your chances of developing
Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the
leading cause of blindness in the over 50's,
believe Cambridge Optometrists. Cutting
smoking is also a major factor in protecting
yourself against AMD, which every week causes 300
people in the UK to loose their sight. If you
have a family history of AMD, or would like to
know the condition of your macula, and the vital
pigment lutein that protects the retina, an easy
test is now available from one of the first
practices in the country to invest in new
diagnostic technology.
Screening takes just five
minutes at DH Thomas Optometrists using a new
macular pigment screener, the Tinsley Mpod.
AMD is set to rise significantly with the
ageing population and the opportunity for this
additional screening is expected to win
considerable favour - "much as we have
become aware of cholesterol levels and the
importance of monitoring and controlling them, we
expect to see the same levels of awareness
developing in relation to the density and
absorption spectrum of the protective macula
pigment," said David Thomas.
